Mel J. Hakan has rejoined Block & Company. He specializes in investment properties and commercial property management. Mel began his association with Allen Block and the late James Block, when their offices were located in the Title Building at 10th Street & Walnut Street in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Mel has been an active real estate broker in Kansas and Missouri for many years and has been active in the development of shopping centers, hotels, and office properties in the metropolitan Kansas City area and other Missouri cities. Mel together with both Allen and Jim Block were pioneers in the development of strip shopping centers.

Some of the properties that they developed are Gaslight Square Shopping Center and apartments in Independence, Missouri, State Line Shopping Center at 103rd & State Line Road, and a number of commercial buildings between 75th & 85th Streets on Wornall Road. He and his partner Ewing Kauffman developed the Clarion (formerly the Adams Mark/Sheraton Royal Hotel) across from the sports complex on Blue Ridge Cut-off & I-70. Mel has also been involved in commercial developments in Columbia, Missouri; Mexico, Missouri; St. Louis, Missouri; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Mel holds the designation of Certified Property Manager (CPM) from the Institute of Real Estate Management of the National Association of Real Estate Boards and is a past-president of the Kansas City Chapter. He is past-president and a board member of the Ozanam Home for Boys.

Mel has 4 children and 5 grandchildren. He lives in Overland Park, Kansas with his wife Rowena.
