Remembering Steven E. Caffey

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Steven E. Caffey, our Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, colleague and friend for over 50 years. Steve passed away on Sunday, November 10th at the age of 74. Steve is survived by his three children, Steve Jr., Megan, and Logan.
Steve dedicated nearly five decades to Block & Company, Inc., Realtors, where he led our property management division and became a leader in our organization, the commercial real estate industry, and beyond. Since joining Block & Company in 1975, Steve was instrumental in expanding our property management portfolio to over 18 million square feet. Working hand in hand with our President, David M. Block, Steve was a guiding force and a steady, powerful presence. He helped Block & Company navigate through times of both challenge and calm, shaping our firm's path through the changing landscape of our industry.
Steve's legacy goes beyond Block & Company. Throughout his career, he served as Director of the Commercial Property Association of Kansas (CPAK), The Old Westport Improvement Association, and The Southtown Council. Steve was active in the community, he was a member of numerous Chambers of Commerce, the Institute of Real Estate Management, the Building Owners and Managers Association, and the International Council of Shopping Centers.
David M. Block, President of Block & Company, Inc., Realtors fondly recalls,
"Steve and I started working at Block at basically the same time and became lifelong friends, associates, and mentors to each other for what many would call multiple lifetimes at the same company. Steve was one of the smartest and quickest real estate transactional brokers in the Kansas City area, he could learn a transaction in one sitting and come back with a solution to a problem immediately. He adapted to every situation as it relates to commercial real estate and if you ever had the pleasure of working with him, you knew you were in good hands because Steve was a closer. Steve was so personable, when you met him you liked him. I personally came to love Steve not only for who he was but for who we grew together to become. Because of him, Block & Company, a nearly 78 year old real estate company, grew to where it is today. His fingerprints are all over this company and our daily operations, we are proud to continue in his footsteps now and in the future. Steve will be truly missed within our organization and we are eternally grateful for the knowledge that he imparted on us everyday. Thank you Steve, we will miss you."Block & Company, Inc., Realtors will be honoring Steve Caffey with an Annual Award in recognition of his impact on our firm and the commercial real estate industry in Kansas City. This award will serve as a lasting tribute to his memory and the difference he made.
