Block & Company's Plaza at the Development wins Capstone Award in KC Business Journal
April 25, 2011
The Kansas City Business Journal named Plaza at the Speedway a winner of the 2011 Capstone Awards in the Retail Development category. The program, now in its sixth year, honors outstanding real estate development projects and transactions throughout the Kansas City area.
Development projects around Kansas City were nominated and reviewed by a panel of judges, considering everything from visual aesthetics to new technological concepts to the projects' relevance in the community. The program's aim is to look beyond dollar figures and square footages and consider how these projects are shaping the community.
The Plaza at the Speedway The Plaza at the Speedway development is bringing national retailers and restaurants to western Wyandotte County. Already home to Walmart Supercenter, Best Buy, Kohl's, as well as Olive Garden, Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Red Lobster, and Wendy's restaurants, the Plaza at the Speedway is designed to meet the everyday needs and demands of the residents in this rapidly growing region of Kansas City, and is the only development of this kind in the area. Construction and leasing have already begun for phase three of the development. Phase three will bring a number of junior box retailers, a fourth super anchor, a Jack in the Box restaurant, as well as a steakhouse, a family style restaurant, and two multi-tenant buildings. The Plaza at the Speedway features green design elements with plenty of green space and pedestrian-friendly walking and seating, as well as LEED certified design practices within the Walmart, Best Buy, and Kohl's stores. In addition, native grass and wildflowers in the berms around the development were used to prevent erosion, reduce run-off, maintain emissions, provide cover and vegetation for wildlife and add color and beauty to the property.
